A new era begins for Coach Twan Herron at LA Southwest College

Coach Twan Herron brings a proven record of success, leadership, and player development as he begins his next chapter at LA Southwest College. During his previous head coaching tenure at West LA College, Herron quickly built a winning program, guiding the Wildcats to a 22–6 overall record and a dominant 9–1 mark at home during the 2017–18 season. His impact was immediate and lasting, earning Western State Conference South Coach of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons while leading the program to a conference championship.

Beyond wins and titles, Herron built a strong foundation of academic and athletic excellence. His teams consistently posted team GPAs above 3.0 across multiple seasons, highlighted by a program-record 3.65 team GPA in 2025. More than 15 of his student-athletes transferred to four-year colleges, while 20 earned Legacy Banner recognition for maintaining GPAs of 3.5 or higher. The program also achieved an 85 percent graduation rate, reflecting a true commitment to success in the classroom.

On the court, Herron guided his teams to five playoff appearances, two conference championships, and helped develop 22 First Team All-Conference selections along with two conference MVPs. His career reached another milestone with more than 1,000 coaching wins, placing him among the most accomplished coaches in women’s basketball history. He also mentored 12 Academic All-State student-athletes who excelled both athletically and academically.

Herron brings more than 20 years of coaching experience to LA Southwest, including four seasons as an assistant at West LA College. In that role, he played a key part in developing high-level talent and preparing student-athletes for opportunities at the four-year level across the country. His track record reflects a coach who understands long-term growth, not just short-term results.

Known for his positive energy and motivational approach, Coach Herron connects easily with his players. His well-known “Twanisms” add both humor and perspective, helping keep the team focused, confident, and accountable. His coaching style emphasizes effort, discipline, trust, and personal growth, both on and off the court.

A Los Angeles native, Herron began his academic and athletic journey at Crenshaw High School. He earned his associate degrees at West LA College and LA Southwest College before completing his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Physical Education at Cal State Dominguez Hills. He plans to continue his education by pursuing a master’s degree in Coaching Psychology, reinforcing his ongoing commitment to developing the total student-athlete.
