LA Southwest shook off a cold start and rolled to a 77–52 win over Barstow in the opening round on Thursday night at Los Angeles Southwest College. The Cougars trailed 19–8 after the first quarter but outscored Barstow 69–33 over the final three periods, using pressure defense and a dominant effort in the paint to take control and advance. Southwest flipped the game in the second quarter by turning defense into offense. Trailing by 11 to start the frame, the Cougars' pressure created a string of live-ball turnovers and layups from the bench group. A layup from Rian Dillihunt, a three from LaiLah Whittle, and attacking finishes from Destiny Hurt-Floyd quickly closed the gap. In the final seconds of the half, a late steal from Kelis Jones led to a streaking layup by Lluvaster Hernandez at the horn, sending the teams into the locker room tied 34–34 and giving Southwest all the momentum. The third quarter broke it open. LA Southwest opened the period on a 31–6 run, repeatedly getting downhill and finishing at the rim. Jones sparked the surge with multiple transition layups, while the Cougars' pressure forced Barstow into turnovers that turned into layups for Dillihunt and Hurt-Floyd. Southwest shot 54.2 percent in the third while holding Barstow to just six points, building a 65–40 lead and never looking back. For the game, the Cougars owned a 50–22 edge in points in the paint, turned 24 Barstow turnovers into 32 points, and saw their bench outscore the visitors 32–3. Kelis Jones finished with 12 points, eight assists, and four steals, and LaiLah Whittle posted 12 points and seven rebounds.
